What We Found Out About Berlin’s Startup Scene

What We Found Out About Berlin’s Startup Scene

Berlin Partner and DEEP Ecosystems jointly analyze the startup ecosystem of Germany's capital

Berlin Partner and DEEP Ecosystems have joined forces to improve the city’s understanding of its thriving startup ecosystem. Everyone is impressed by record sums of investments in 2021, which reached more than 8.8bn €. Yet we asked ourselves: How is the current health of the support system for startups? Did we miss anything in the rush to ever larger growth? And how can we make sure Berlin remains the buzzing, creative hub that entrepreneurs, grassroot organizations, and change-makers love so much?

An open tool to empower local ecosystem builders around the world

The Ecosystem Health Check has been developed by Swisscontact and DEEP Ecosystems as a tool to monitor the performance of an ecosystem based on locally adapted indicators.

The key goal of the tool is to help ecosystem builders around the world to assess their startup community’s strong points and weaknesses. Berlin Partner was one of the first to try out the toolkit together with DEEP Ecosystems. As a result, Berlin is helping other cities around the world to learn from the experiences.

The objective of the tool is to identify through a defined process the key performance indicators a startup community builder would track to measure the growth and progress of their ecosystem.

Although every startup hub will have other challenges and use different proxies, the underlying categories are similar.

Berlin had a record €8.8bn startup investments in 2021

The tool therefore focuses on guiding practitioners through the development of key metrics. These metric, in turn, are based on eight categories, ranging from diversity and inclusivity to network density and international connectivity.

The advantages of having experienced founders

For example, a key question in the discussions was regarding the level of the experience of founders. After many years of active startup support, the number of entrepreneurs who start their second or third company has grown. Consequently, we identified this as a key indicator for the quality of the city’s talent pool. Another important aspect in the global competition for the best startup conditions is Berlin’s ability to attract top Venture Capital firms to the city, notably in order to scout local companies from an office in town.

Implementing partners: Berlin Partner, Swisscontact, and DEEP Ecosystems.

Of course, we also paid special attention to other important indicators. In this case, this included the share of female founders, the percentage of foreign-born founders, or the number of meetup events in the city.

Supporting startup ecosystems around the world

DEEP Ecosystems and Berlin Partner continue to work on the analysis. We seek to support other startup hubs around the world, by helping them to measure their ecosystem’s health with this self-service tool.
